Justice by Design is a collective of designers, researchers, and strategists who turn complex social challenges into accessible, equitable solutions. Drawing on 15+ years of court and legal aid experience plus design work across 11+ jurisdictions, we know exactly where to focus improvements that will have the biggest impact on user experience.

Sarah Mauet

Sarah (she/her) is a UX researcher, designer, and strategist with more than 15 years of experience designing innovative, human-centered solutions for complex challenges. Sarah has a track record of leading successful tech projects for governments, hospitals, universities, and startups, and now focuses her efforts on justice tech innovation. Since 2020, she has worked with courts, government organizations, legal service providers, and community members in nearly a dozen states to design trauma-informed justice sector tech and service solutions that improve access to justice.

Nathanael Player

Nathanael has worked for over 15 years to serve people facing legal challenges. Starting as an eviction defense lawyer at legal services offices in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. he then worked at the Utah State Courts as a high-level manager overseeing efforts to provide and expand access to justice. His legal services and court administration experience, across three different jurisdictions, give him an informed and nuanced perspective on how access to justice is provided and can be improved.

Cheenar Shah

Cheenar Shah is a designer and design researcher with over five years of experience applying trauma-informed, human-centered design across healthcare, civic technology, and education. She develops visual systems, intervention tools, and research materials that are culturally responsive, accessible, and practical. Working closely with universities, nonprofits, and justice sector organizations, Cheenar uses design to support collaboration, translate research into meaningful solutions, and address complex social challenges with care and clarity.

Verenice Ramirez

Verenice Ramirez (she/her) is a bilingual UX . designer and researcher with experience in civic tech and the justice system. She has led projects that redesigned court forms, improved guided interview tools, and mapped statewide user journeys, reducing barriers for self-represented litigants and advancing more equitable, accessible legal systems.
